Aurora Renewables LP Celebrates Completion of SaskPower’s Northern Saskatchewan Microgrid Project, Powered by an All-Indigenous Workforce

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan — Aurora Renewables LP proudly announces its successful contribution to Saskatchewan’s first fully integrated solar-diesel-battery microgrid, which is now supplying clean, reliable energy to the remote northern community of Descharme Lake.

Led and commissioned by the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC), this landmark project is designed to cost-effectively enhance energy reliability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in remote regions. Aurora Renewables LP was subcontracted to design and construct the solar array, a central component of the microgrid, which works in tandem with battery storage and backup generators to improve environmental sustainability. Bringing innovation to every project, Aurora incorporated all-black solar panels to boost winter performance by enhancing snow melting.

A defining feature of the project was Aurora’s all-Indigenous workforce, made up of skilled tradespeople from across Northern Saskatchewan. This project model reflects a strong commitment to local capacity building and advancing Indigenous participation in the clean energy sector.

Headquartered in Saskatoon, SK, Aurora Renewables LP is majority-owned by Des Nedhe Group, the economic development corporation of the English River First Nation.

“This project reflects our belief that Indigenous participation in the energy transition must be front and centre,” said Jonathan Palmer, VP of Aurora Renewables. “It’s not just about building infrastructure — it’s about building capacity, careers, and community pride.”
